Developed Birding as my Hobby!

It is been 3 years since my family moved into our new build house in 2017. The house is situated in M.V Paradise Layout amidst the scattered wilderness and surrounded by a few villages coming under rural Mysore. After being in a bustling, raucous, and crowded  Bengaluru city for more than 3 decades, this place seems to appear still, mystic, and isolated except for the constant twittering and chirping of various birds around dawn, dusk, and most of the daytime. Obviously, I do not want to overlook the nocturnal birds who visit our premises at nightfall.

After encountering several birds like crows, common mynas, rock pigeons, etc in the city, I was delighted to encounter the wild birds new to me living around the woods. Whilst living in Bengaluru, I was not into birding nor was I too interested in Bird watching. Unquestionably, Mysore is known for 190 species of resident birds. In the beginning, most of their calls were unique and dissimilar from
what I heard in the city previously. Gradually, I developed a fondness to study birds, curious about their behaviors and activities. Hence I purchased a binocular, and the Book, Birds Of Indian Subcontinent’ Second Edition by Richard Grimmett, Carol Inskipp, and Tim Inskipp.  In addition to these, took the help of the google search engine to discover their identities, their calls and explored their behavior of the birds.

Wildlife is incomplete without the existence of other creatures like reptiles, small mammals, invertebrates, and of course vegetation. All birds thrive on these elements for their survival. Therefore, we placed a tray of mixed grains and a bowl of fresh water in our backyard. Our backyard contains some trees bearing fruits like papaya, mango, bananas, etc.  In addition, there are some blossoming trees and plants and a little bit of greenery to attract all kinds of birds around here. Small mammals like mongooses, Hares, squirrels, rodents. Reptiles like garden lizards, snakes, lizards, scorpions, etc are also present around the woods as well as in our backyard.

The first set of birds I encountered are the ones that were close to human habitation. The shiest ones who once lived in our backyard have shifted their habitat to open woods nearby at once we shifted here. Slowly but surely, one by one the creatures and birds dropped their shyness to rediscover our backyard once again. Some of them are frequent and daily visitors, some are regular only during the spring and summer seasons. Others become active only during the monsoon season and quite a few during the winter season.

I have elaborated on my encounter with each of the birds' species from my next post onwards.
